Katlin and Kurtis kept everything close together with the ceremony at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist and the reception at the Metropolitan at the 9.

Katlin may be the most enthusiastic bride about photography
I’ve ever worked with!
Lolly the Trolley brought everyone from the Metropolitan at the 9
to the ceremony in a light rain. A Cleveland institution.
I always love a reception at the Metropolitan at the 9. Their vault
is such a great place to be creative with photos. I love the
challenge of finding something unique each time I’m there.
The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist has quite a history in
downtown Cleveland. Father Patrick is a friend of the bride
and performed the ceremony.
Katlin said her mother had a scare earlier in the day. She woke at
4 am thinking it was 9 am because she looked at the antique
bedside clock. But it was just for decoration and not actually functioning.
When the flower girl Ruth, niece of Kurtis, walked down the aisle
she did it twice because she was having so much fun. As
you’ll see in this post she was fun to photograph too!
Once we were back to the Metropolitan at the 9 we did the family
photos and portraits. Then the couple took a short break
to have time to themselves. Kurtis told me Katlin talked
quite a bit about the photos we’d made so far that day. I
told you she was enthusiastic about the photos!
We were able to do some bridal party photos in the atrium overlooking
the Heinen’s grocery store in the Cleveland Trust rotunda
building that was opened in 1910. Then I wanted to get some
of the couple just outside to show the exterior just before
the reception started. Then a few minutes later the cocktail
hour started in the vault at the Metropolitan at the 9 and
then the reception in the Mint Ballroom.
Later that night we snuck out for a few minutes at sunset to get some
photos on the Azure Roof Top Lounge.
Ruth and Dom, nephew of Kurtis, walk down the aisle.
Not sure what Ruth is doing at this moment with Rebecca
and Kim, the parents of groom Kurtis.
I love looking for photos that don’t just show the venue but have
context and tell the story. This is part of my photojournalism background
as a former photographer at the Plain Dealer. I ran across the street before
the couple got out of Lolly the Trolly. I had no idea she would raise her
bouquet to someone as they ran and it takes the photos to another level.
It’s important to anticipate and then always be ready for the moment.
The Vault at the Metropolitan at the 9! So many possibilities.
Moet champagne poured into the Ice Luge that was done by Elegant Ice
Creations. They won a gold medal in the 2006 Winter Olympics at
Turino for the category with ice sculptures.
What an energetic entrance!
There’s the flower girl Ruth again!
Katlin and Kurtis were really touched by the toast his brother Marcus gave.
Later that night the bride ended at the Jack Cleveland Casino in her
dress and won $150 while playing craps. I’m sure everyone was cheering for her!
This wedding easily goes down as one of my favorites! The couple currently
lives in Chicago and will soon be moving to Cleveland in the next week.
The windy city’s loss is our gain.
