Katy and Justin had a gorgeous Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens wedding!
Please enjoy, Scott Shaw Photo | Cleveland Wedding Photographer
It’s always wonderful when I’m photographing a Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens wedding!
I’ve known Katy for six years or so and was thrilled when she asked me to photograph her wedding saying she couldn’t
imagine anyone else doing a better job. She even checked my availability to decide on her date! How sweet of her.
I didn’t meet Justin until the wedding day and was so happy to see how much he cared for Katy and made her happy.
He was so helpful making sure we made great photos. Some of his groomsmen however were a bit of challenge! Most of
them were in the Navy with Justin and they clearly had a special bond and are great guys.
When Katy told me this would be a Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens wedding I was excited for the photo possibilities.
Katy: “I always talked about getting married at Stan Hywet with my mom. I always thought it was romantic and fairytale-like.
When my date became available I screamed, cried a little and immediately said yes. ” Katy’s mom, Chris, passed in
2011 after a battle with cancer. “She was my best friend and always talked about wanting me to get married at Stan Hywet”.
Her presence was definitely felt on the day and also represented with a charm on Katy’s bouquet and a special bouquet was
placed on a chance during the ceremony.
Katy had some dress issues for a bit of pre-wedding day stress. “My dress was a nightmare. I pulled it from the original
seamstress less than four weeks before the wedding and Bobbie from All Brides Beautiful completely redid it to fix the
first person’s mistakes. I had no idea what it was going to look like until the Wednesday before the wedding.”
We did getting ready photos at Stan Hywet and after the ceremony wandered the grounds for portraits before heading to the
Akron Art Museum. By the time we got there we only had about 15 minutes to photograph inside the galleries before the
museum hosted a wedding reception. Talk about moving fast! That’s not a lot of time to scout all of the space and think
of what I wanted to do with the wedding party.
This is where my photojournalism training and experience at the Plain Dealer comes in handy with scouting locations quickly
and thinking what works best in the situation. Look below for the results!
Then everyone took a break in a parking lot just down from the museum for some Swenson’s and it was worth it!
Katy: “Swensons was an absolute must! My brother David and friend Jon aka husband of Angelica, bridesmaid happily volunteered
to go pick Swensons up to treat the bridal party. Justin and I both only had about one bite.
Food break over it was time to head to the Willowdale Lake Country Club. It’s a wonderful remote spot surrounded by water I’d
never been to before.
After a honeymoon filled with much warmer water in Riviera Maya, Mexico the couple is back in Chicago.
Bridesmaid Angelica has her own hair and makeup company in Chicago and helped Katy look her best.
Justin’s sister, Kristen and her son, Jacob enjoyed some quality mirror time.
Groomsman Luis helped keep the guys thirst quenched before the ceremony.
Justin’s mother, Jan, helped with his boutonniere.
The bridesmaids looked down on arriving friends and family.
Katy wanted the girls to see her all at once when she was ready.
Katy greeted Luke, the youngest groomsmen.
Katy took a deep breath seeing Justin for the first time as her father, Mike, walked her down the aisle.
Look how happy Justin was to see beautiful Katy!
Their friend, Dan, was a spirited officiant and I loved his efforts. He also surprised everyone with
donuts after the ceremony which was a plus!
The bouquet in honor of Katy’s mother, Chris.
This peanut butter and jelly unity ceremony was a first for me.
The wonderful Akron Art Museum-so excited to finally make some wedding portraits there even if we
were late and only had 15 minutes!
Everyone enjoyed the Swensons food break.
